UPDATE (01/04/2024): I have an update on this bug. For me, shutting down the Nintendo Switch and returning to the game resolved the issue. The beam now retracts when draining the energy source. I will credit one of the developers who was responsive through the game’s Discord server.
Elypse (2023) is 2D action platformer developed by Hot Chili Games. The game was published by East2West Games and Plug In Digital and to be honest I rarely heard anything about it. I believe I found out about the game from a review by SwitchCorner on YouTube; maybe I should have paid closer attention to the gripes.
Looks like the game came out on Steam/PC on May 17, 2023. Elypse hit PS5 and Nintendo Switch three (3) weeks later on August 5, 2023. The game is visually beautiful and seems to have an intriguing enough story.
Like usual, I picked the game up and let it sit on my digital shelf for some time. I dived into it for the first time on the Nintendo Switch on December 23, 2023. I was able to fight my way through the first stage and defeat the first boss, which is referred to as Rat Horn by @JabaPlay on YouTube.
It took some effort to get use to the controls (which honestly are never totally comfortable for me). My biggest initial and chronic complaint is the inability to change the JUMP input to B instead of A (for reference I use the Pro Controller). This is an age old complaint that I thought was pretty much resolved in most games…usually if there is one control you can adjust it is this simple swap. Other than this and my own personal skill issues the game is rather challenging and gripping (in other words it’s tough but I still want to press forward).
BUT…and like they say, “nothing said before but really matters.” The game has a bug or glitch or malfunction or whatever it may be called in the digital gaming world. This major issue is present in what I am guessing is the third area??? The Abyssal Caverns. There is an abrupt halt in gameplay. While ascending on a platform dodging obstacles and enemies, the player is supposed to activate an opening to progress. This appears to work on PC/Steam…
In particular the player uses Y to drain an energy source which should deactivate a beam blocking the path. The function simply does not work and the player is unable to pass. See the image below. The current version (1.0.14) of the game was said to fix issues on the Nintendo Switch and released on November 14, 2023. Apparently that patch included “global optimization for smoother gameplay, fixed collisions, reworked Japanese localization, better scene loading and resolved dialogue issues” per @Hot_Chili_Games via Twitter.
Looks like we will (hopefully) be getting another patch in the future! I will keep you updated but meanwhile check out my YouTube channel for other platform game playthroughs via @ItsuKomodo.
